Am I safe?

Every single second this is what your hypothalamus is asking. Am I safe? You see, what you THINK, not what you SEE is what your hypothalamus is responding to. So, if you tell yourself “I’m so stressed,” your body will respond accordingly.

When you are in a stress response, your body believes it may die from imminent danger. The stress response takes nutrients out of your body. Adrenalin saps your body of magnesium, vitamin C and Vitamin B. You need magnesium to support a healthy nervous system and to sleep well. You need vitamin C for your immune response. Vitamin B supports the nervous system and helps with energy.

When you’re stressed, what do you crave? For most people it’s usually carbs and sugar. When you’re stressed, you make poor food choices and you are more likely to eat quickly while sitting at your desk reading emails. This is the exact OPPOSITE of what your body needs in times of stress.

The crazy thing is, when I ask people if they feel stressed, often they say no. Even though they have just told me about the pressure at work or home and the 25 things they are currently juggling. When you are in a constant stress response, you no longer feel stressed. It becomes your regular feeling.

Let’s face it, we can’t all be monks meditating several hours a day. We do the best we can to handle all the obligations we face on a daily basis. But you can support your body’s nutritional needs with supplements.
