Thyroid Related Health Issues are Increasing

Why are Thyroid Related Health Issues Increasing? Well, some people feel it’s toxins in the environment. Even low doses of radiation can cause issues in the thyroid.

Flouride, Lead and Mercury in Everyday Items

Fluoride suppresses thyroid function. It was added into our water to help with cavities, but now we get way too much exposure to fluoride because it’s in toothpaste too. I even refuse fluoride treatments at the dentist for me, and my child. We use non-fluoride toothpaste and we have water filters on the showerheads and at the kitchen sink which removes fluoride.

What about your makeup and skin care products? Each person uses an average of 7 personal care products per day! Each time you put something on your skin it goes into your blood stream and your body needs to clear it out. Did you know lipstick can have lead in it? Crazy. You can go to EWG.org and check out your current skin care products to see how toxic they are.

Mercury fillings in your mouth are also a cause of toxins. Can you believe some dentists still use mercury in their fillings? Every time you drink something hot, you get a small amount of mercury in your body. Removal of the fillings can be dangerous if not done by a biological dentist. My husband actually went down to Sanoviv Medical Institute in Rosarito, Mexico to have his filling properly removed. They did a 3-day protocol of detoxing his body while removing the fillings. The amazing thing is, it was less expensive than doing it locally without all the detox support.

Your Thyroid Health

[tweetthis]One of the best things you can do for your thyroid health is to do an elimination diet[/tweetthis], like I spoke about in the prior segment. That will help heal your gut. The gut is essential to your overall health.

Hypothyroid and Hashimoto’s are the most common issues I see with patients in my practice. So what are the symptoms?

  1. By far this is the biggest issue with most of my patients who have low thyroid. They don’t even have energy to get out of bed let alone exercise.
  2. Feeling heavy in your head, often in the afternoon.
  3. Easily falling asleep the moment you sit down to relax.
  4. Weight gain that won’t budge no matter how much you exercise or how little you eat.
  5. Rough or dry skin even after moisturizing.
  6. Low body temperature. Usually less than 97.6F over a 3-4 day period.
  7. Hair loss or thinning.
  8. Cold all the time. You can be slow to warm up and even have trouble sweating when exercising or in a sauna.

Be Gluten-Free

The first thing I have patients do is get off gluten. Even if you can eat wheat and have no digestive issues, it is causing inflammation in your body. Remember leaky gut? When those food particles get into the blood stream, you’re going to have an autoimmune reaction to them. That can trigger issues with your thyroid. Your body will start to see your thyroid as a foreign body and attack it. Not good. If you need help getting off gluten, I have loads of resources, just email me at Donna@DonnaAcupuncture.com.

Stop eating soy products. By the way, soy sauce has gluten in it. Soy is a highly processed food and is not healthy. It’s used as a substitute in many “health” foods. Many vegetarians use it as a primary source of protein. Fermented soy is good. Those are foods like tempeh, natto, and miso. Soy is a GMO food that is resistant to toxic weed and bug killers. New research is showing that the effects of GMO foods are causing sterilization in the 3rd generation of lab rats. What about organic soy? Well, it’s a goitrogen and that disrupts thyroid function. Soy milk is something that is commonly consumed. It contains properties that inhibit mineral absorption in the body. Look at the ingredients of protein bars as they often contain soy protein isolates. These are not good for the body. And don’t get me started on soy infant formulas. You don’t want infants to consume soy formulas. Conventional formulas are better than soy, but not as good as breastfeeding. I understand that not everyone can breastfeed and there is an option to make your own infant formula. It’s not that hard to do and the ingredients are easily found in most stores. Stay away from soy cheese and soy yogurts as well. There are many books and science to support this.

Avoid Bromine

Reduce your exposure and consumption of bromine. Bromine is an endocrine disrupter. It’s found in some soft drinks in the form of brominated veg oils. It’s in baked goods labeled as dough conditioner. It’s in pesticides and predominately used on strawberries in California, so eat organic strawberries. Bromine is also found in fire retardants, plastics and some medications such as Atrovent inhaler.

Be Stress Free

Reduce your stress. Are you tired of hearing me say that? It seems like stress can be the cause of so many physical issues. When stress becomes chronic, your adrenals glands are putting out cortisol and adrenaline constantly. This is not what they were made to do. They are there to get you safely out of a life-threatening situation. The constant output of stress hormones affects the thyroid hormones. This can lead to obesity, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. When the stress is prolonged, your adrenals will finally give out and then you will experience adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue is so common amongst my patients that I created a Facebook group called Adrenal Fatigue Repair. It’s free to join and I post lots of great information on how to repair your adrenals.

Conclusion

So, remember, for better thyroid health detox your body, eat clean foods, take epsom salts baths, and take a high quality nutritional supplement that has iodine in it.
