Are You Losing Your Hair?

Are You Losing Your Hair? Have you noticed more hair in the shower drain or maybe more hair in your brush? I hate this phrase and use it way too often, but AS WE AGE… Things change in our bodies and hair is one of them.

Hair loss isn’t really a hot topic for women, as that’s the zone usually reserved for men, but it can happen to women as well. One common cause of hair loss amongst women is menopausal hair loss. About half of all women experience some hair thinning or loss by the age of 50. Why do you have to suffer with yet another symptom of menopause? And, more importantly, what can you do about it?

Menopausal hair loss doesn’t normally cause baldness in women, but it can get patchy and pretty thin up there. As hormonal levels decline with age, it affects your body’s ability to produce more hair strands. This is normal and all too common. Androgens, a group of hormones, don’t increase during the menopause transition, but the ratio between estrogen and androgen changes, so while estrogen decreases you have more androgen relatively.
So, what can you do about it? I’ve got a few suggestions that I have seen work in my patients.

  • Reduce Stress – Eliminate anything that gives you too much anxiety or stress as best as you can. Ha! Easier said than done, but well worth the effort. Stress makes your body sick in many ways, hair loss is just one. So make a small effort daily to breathe, take some time to yourself and do whatever self care ritual you love. Taking time for yourself is not selfish, it’s what will regenerate you, so you can show up for others in a way that doesn’t deplete you.
  • Eat Well – Nothing beats a healthy balanced diet. By eating a well-balanced meal, you can aid your body in combating hair loss giving it more energy and more nutrients to produce more hair. Inflammation can cause hair loss and a diet filled with processed foods and sugar causes inflammation. What is a healthy hair helping diet? Make your plate ¾ veggies and the last ¼ in a clean protein that is other an animal source or beans. Eat good clean fats like olive oil, avocados and coconut. Eat a variety of foods and rotate your foods so you don’t eat the same things too often in a week.
  • Drink Lots of Water – To put it simply, rehydrating properly and supplying your body with good water will certainly make you feel better. Even chonic pain can be helped with more hydration. Hydration even helps reduce hot flashes.

Some other things to consider.

  • Get your thyroid levels checked
  • Check you Iron levels for anemia
  • Check Nutrient levels for vitamin deficiencies
  • Take nutritional Hair Supplements
