Better With Age
If people based their beliefs only on what they see in the media, they might come away convinced that aging is somewhat akin to a crime. And if they buy into the photo-shopped images that are so pervasive in society, it is understandable that some people will do almost anything to avoid aging. But is aging really all that bad? There are numerous positives that come with growing older. Many people feel more confident and comfortable with themselves as they age, having learned to appreciate the little things in life, to learn from their mistakes and to value each day.
That isn’t to say that one should simply age without concern for health or appearance. Taking care of your health will actually allow you to embrace the positives of growing older, especially since age also brings some unique health concerns.
Keep your bones strong. Adequate calcium and vitamin D throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Also, make sure that you exercise regularly.
Stay sharp. While most people tend to forget things now and then, age-related memory loss is a real concern. Some forgetfulness is expected. There is only so much room in one’s brain for all the information taken in daily. However, memory loss does not have to be the norm. Stay active, both mentally and physically. Seek out opportunities to socialize. Get regular exercise.
Pay attention to your skin. That wrinkle-free, baby soft skin of youth is beautiful. But so are the laugh lines that add character as people age. Some people go to extreme measures to maintain youthful skin. If you choose to embrace the added character, you will still want to care for your skin. As we age our skin loses some of its elasticity and begins to show the effects of environmental factors like the sun. Cleansing, moisturizing and protecting your skin should still be a part of your daily routine.
With age comes wisdom. Make sure you apply the wisdom you’ve gained to help yourself stay healthy!
