Cold, Flu, or Coronavirus?

I’ve seen so many patients this winter fighting colds and flu that I thought sharing some simple tips would be good. I’m often asked if I get a flu shot. No, I don’t get a flu shot. There’s some really great new studies showing vitamin D supplementation being more effective at fighting the flu than the flu shot.

My Routine

Whenever a patient comes in who has a cold or is fighting one, I wipe down all the door knobs and surfaces in the office with bleach wipes. Not my favorite, but very effective. Then I take a dose of my favorite herbal remedy from Health Concerns, Cold Away. My daily regimen includes taking high quality nutritional supplements, eating whole foods, exercising, and getting to bed before 10pm. Through the winter I take Booster C from USANA and an immune boosting herb from Designs for Health.

Travel

Another way to easily catch colds is when traveling. Traveling to new places can be a fun, positive, and enlightening adventure. But it can also be hard on your body. It lowers your immune system while exposing you to bacteria and viruses.

Refine Your Hygiene

Here are some other tips you might find helpful.
  • Keep natural, essential oil based hand sanitizers in the car and travel bag. I always use mine after pumping gas.
  • Wipe down your phones, door knobs, and light switches.
  • Change out your dish towels often as viruses can linger.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow.
  • Be more mindful about touching your face. The average person touches their face 50 times a day!

Hand Washing

  • Use soap and water and sing “Happy Birthday” twice while soaping your hands.
  • Wash hands often:
    • When you return home
    • When you get to the office
    • Before cooking
    • Before eating
    • After the bathroom
    • When and after you leave the conference room
    • And after leaving someone else’s office
