I think of Melatonin as a sleep aid. And as we age our bodies produce less of it naturally so taking a supplement about 1 hour before you want to sleep can be very helpful in easing your body into dreamland.
Melatonin is a hormone synthesized by the Pineal gland in the brain. When it’s dark, your brain clicks into sleep mode and starts releasing the hormone. When you produce enough of it, your sleep is sound and deep.
Studies have suggested the supplement could block key steps in the development of Alzheimer’s. Seems as though it acts as a brain antioxidant and inhibits plaque in the brain.
An animal study recently suggests that melatonin may also be effective is blocking the development of Lou Gehrig’s disease (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS). Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant that blocks the release of enzymes that activate programmed cell death of nerve cells involved in the development of ALS.
So, as we age and produce less melatonin, we are more susceptible to dementia, Alzheimer’s, immune weakness, and breast and prostate cancer. (To read the full study info, click here)
Melatonin research is showing powerful effects in preserving health and preventing disease, not to mention giving you a better night’s sleep. And who doesn’t appreciate a good night’s sleep? I know I do.
I use Pure Rest by USANA for my melatonin. Remember that like vitamin supplements, not all melatonin is made the same. Do your best to take the melatonin 1 hour before going to bed. I suggest starting with 1/2 to 1 tablet of Pure Rest. With USANA’s quality, I find people get the benefits with less tablets. If you need more, you can take up to 3-4. The biggest caveat is to make sure you have 7-8 hours of sleep otherwise the supplement may make you a bit groggy in the morning.
If you’re already a USANA customer, you can easily add Pure Rest to your regular order. If you need help or are not already a customer, email me and I’ll be happy to help you get set up.
