Autumn – The Perfect Time to Let Go and Be Renewed

perfect time to let go
When is the perfect time to let go? Is there a perfect time to let go of worries, hatred and negative feelings?
I heard Autumn is.

Forgiveness is Letting Go

My family and I had the pleasure of attending a community Yom Kippur meditation in a redwood grove last week. It was magical and peaceful.
What I loved most about it was how the Rabbi spoke of forgiveness. Often forgiveness is thought of as asking God to forgive our sins. She spoke of it a bit differently.

When we forgive those who have wronged us in some manner, we are lightening our own heart and letting go of old resentments. This allows us to move forward anew in our lives. It made me think of that saying:

“Resentment is like taking poison and hoping it’ll kill someone else.”
— Alan Brandt

Autumn – A Perfect Time to Let Go

So that brings me around to the season of autumn. In 5 Element Acupuncture, it’s the time of letting go.

Look around you – nature is letting go of its abundant creation of summer. The autumn leaves turn yellow and brown and then are released back to the earth.
This season tells us, as humans, it’s time to let go of what is no longer serving us. You may feel some grief around this time and that’s appropriate as the element of this time is metal and its emotion is grief.
I often feel a bit of grief at this time of year as summer is my favorite season and fall is forcing me to release my flip-flops and reach for a sweater.

Connecting with your metal element

How can you get in tune with the season and your metal element? Remember my favorite book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”? Well, if you have it pull it out because that’s the first step.

1. Clean out clutter

It doesn’t have to be a big deal. It can be a single drawer or sorting out your summer clothes that you haven’t worn in 3 summers. Or maybe it’s just the medicine cabinet. Donate, sell, or recycle as much as you can.

2. Clean out your attitude.

Do you have any mental clutter weighing you down? Attempt to resolve old issues with those people and then let them go. If they are no longer here or you cannot speak with them for whatever reason, write it all out on paper and then burn it. This releases it from your energy. Thank it and let it go as you are finished with it. It no longer serves you.

3. Breathe deeply.

Each morning, breathe in deeply and slowly. The lungs connect with the metal element. Take in the clean, clear pure air and exhale any negativity or pain.

It’s the perfect time to let go. Are you ready?

It’s not an easy thing to do, but it can be done. Now is the perfect time to do this.

“Think of waking up on a brisk fall day and filling your lungs with that clean, cool autumn air. The Lung, the other organ contained within the Metal element, enables us to take in the pure, the new. It grants us the inspiration of a breath of fresh air. In classical Chinese medicine, the Lung is described as “the receiver of the pure Chi from the Heavens.” Neal Gumenick
