Sleep, Stress and Supplements

Stress is Unhealthy

Stress affects how fat and sugar are processed. It also affects weight gain, heart disease, hormones and DNA. It can shorten your life.  You’ve heard all this before, but what do you do about it. If you weren’t so stressed, you’d have time to relax and meditate.

Sleep is the Key

[tweetthis]Well, first off, get more sleep. Most people think 6 or 7 hours is just fine, but you really need more like 8 or 9.[/tweetthis] The reason sleep is so key is that growth hormone is released while in deep REM sleep. This hormone helps reduce fat, increases your immune system and helps your liver function. Good liver function is also key to keeping cholesterol levels in balance. Lack of sleep decreases your vitamin D levels, which is linked to cancer.

Effects of Stress

Cortisol, the stress hormone, is released by the adrenal glands and assists you with energy. Too much cortisol throughout the day will increase your blood sugar levels and causes your body to store fat. It also decrease collagen which will increase wrinkles in your face.

Melatonin Supplements

So, one of the best things you can do for stress is get more sleep. If you don’t sleep well, try melatonin supplements. My biggest suggestion for supplementation is a multi with anti-oxidants, clean fish oil, CoQ30, Hepasil DTX and Proflavenal C (these are USANA brand). The last 3 are key for supporting your adrenals. When you’ve been under stress for an extended period of time, you are at risk of depleting your adrenal glands. These supplements will also support heart health, liver function, skin health and auto-immune function.

Have a great week.
