>Maybe it’s your Thyroid.

>As an acupuncturist, I see a lot of people with varying symptoms. One of the most common, is fatigue. We are all very tired and often sleep deprived. Quite often, a good nutritional supplement, better sleep hours and some minor modifications in diet can make a big difference. But what if that doesn’t work? One strong possibility might be an iodine deficiency. Without enough iodine, your body might not be making adequate mounts of thyroid hormones.

A diet that is primarily plants can be a factor, especially if your main source of protein is from soy. Although plants are listed as a good source of iodine, the determining factor is really the soil in which they are grown. Our soil is depleted due to over farming the same land and our vegetables have less nutrients in them. The reason is, the seeds are formulated to grow red beautiful tomatoes, broccoli with large heads and perfectly shaped cucumbers. This is what the consumer has come to demand and large companies are providing it.

Dr. Christian Northrup’s web site at http://www.drnorthrup.com/ has tons of info on Thyroid health. Oprah has also spoken out about her personal thyroid issues.

The thyroid is the organ connected to the 5th chakra in the Chakra system. “In many women thyroid dysfunction develops because of an energy blockage in the throat region, the result of a lifetime of “swallowing” words one is aching to say. In the name of preserving harmony, or because these women have learned to live as relatively helpless members of their families or social groups, they have learned to stifle their self-expression.” Dr. Northrup

In 1985, Dr. Sehnert routinely tested thyroid function on all his patients. He also used a special computerized assessment tool call the Integrated Wellness Analysis. The were able to figure out the thyroid type. Thjis was the type of person who likes to communicate, and is upfront and straightforward. They like to plan, organize, and predict. They use communication to get agreement on plans and have high expectations for others to follow through on agreements. Such a person is often stubborn, persistent, and a perfectionist with a high sense of responsibility and integrity, willing to tackle life head on.

Under stress this type of person first experiences agitation and anger. Unlike Dr. Northrup’s observation of women “swallowing their words,” this person typically expresses their resentment or displeasure. They are especially irritated when agreements are not kept. Under prolonged periods of stress this person experiences considerable inflammation that is driven by oxidizing adrenaline. It became clear that individuals with the highest levels of thyroid auto-antibodies had been through prolonged periods of this type of stress, directly inducing thyroid problems. The excessive adrenaline raises cortisol and disturbs leptin function (the fat hormone), resulting in a difficult metabolic problem that makes stored fat go numb and leads to weight gain around the midsection.

Next time, I’ll write about the Thymus type.
