Turmeric Jamu Recipe: How to make Indonesian Jamu Drink

Turmeric Jamu Recipe

Have you heard of Turmeric Jamu? Do you know the Turmeric Jamu Recipe?

Let’s explore this idea and make our own Indonesian Turmeric Jamu Drink.

Healing Properties of Turmeric

I recently shared the healing properties of Turmeric. This week I want to share another recipe with you from Dr. Deb Kern. Hope you enjoy it.

Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the most popular ingredients used in Jamu because of its many benefits in healing, from easing pain and tension in bones and joints, improving metabolism, and lowering the risk of cancer.

When combining turmeric with a few other ingredients such as raw honey, the Turmeric Jamu that Balinese drink can be a powerful tool in fighting various ailments.

As much as I wish you could hop on a plane and join me in Bali, you don’t have to travel all the way to Bali to enjoy the healing benefits of Turmeric Jamu.

Here’s how to make your own DIY Turmeric Jamu

To start making your own DIY Turmeric Jamu, you’ll need to prepare a few ingredients. The items below will make roughly 1 liter and can be stored in the refrigerator after.

Ingredients

  1. ½ cup washed turmeric root, roughly chopped
  2. 3cm ginger root, roughly chopped
  3. 4 cups filtered water
  4. 2tbs raw honey
  5. Juice of 1 lime

Method

  1. In a blender or ‘bullet’, combine the turmeric, ginger, and ½ cup of water. Blitz on high speed until the mixture resembles a fine puree
  2. Pour the puree into a pot and add remaining water and honey. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to continue cooking at a gentle simmer for 20 minutes
  3. Turn off heat and add lemon
  4. Using a straining sheet, strain the mixture into a container and keep in the fridge for future use.

(HINT: because turmeric stains, I drink my 6-ounce daily portion through a glass, reusable straw.)

Besides turmeric, the other ingredients incorporated in this DIY Turmeric Jamu recipe have historically been used to help treat ailments worldwide.

Fresh ginger, has been known to aid gastrointestinal and nausea issues. It is also high in anti-inflammatory compounds which help reduce pain in sore muscles. The ‘healthy sweating’ that ginger causes through its spiciness also helps to cure the flu and boost detoxification.

Raw honey is a great source of antioxidants and has been used for centuries as antibacterials and antifungals to treat different infections, even to fight a certain staph bacterial infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Honey is also effective in treating the common cold, and when consumed daily can help to prevent it.

Lime, being high in vitamin c, helps with digestion and weight loss, and is also very beneficial to the skin. Lime keeps the skin glowing, rejuvenates it, and protects it from infections and reduces body odor.
All of these natural and pure ingredients combined with turmeric blend together into one potent tonic!
