Healthy Substitutions that can Satisfy any Sweet Tooth

Whether you’re a big fan of sweets or just like a little treat every so often, there’s no denying how tricky it can be to stick to a healthy diet. [tweetthis]Saying goodbye to desserts and sweet snacks can be bittersweet, to say the least.[/tweetthis] However, with a little creativity and adventurous spirit, you can find new ways to satisfy your sweet tooth (without busting your diet).

Are you a chocoholic?

In the world of sweets, chocolate reigns supreme. Whether you enjoy milk chocolate or prefer the darker varieties, there are a variety of healthy products out there that offer the taste you crave (without the extra calories). The downside? They don’t last very long once you start snacking, leaving you hopelessly looking for more inside an empty wrapper.

Instead, try whipping up a glass of chocolate milk or a cozy cup of hot chocolate. Your sweet tooth will be satisfied and you can sip at your leisure, giving you the chocolate taste you crave over an extended period of time.

Can’t get enough candy?

If candy is what your sweet tooth craves, then this healthy substitution is just for you. Buy a bunch of grapes and transfer the grapes to an airtight container. Freeze them overnight and pack them in a small plastic bag or container to enjoy as a snack at work or on the go. Their natural sweetness is sure to satisfy cravings, and the popsicle-like consistency of the frozen grapes delivers a candy-like texture.

Do you dream of ice cream?

Store-bought ice cream can be high in fat and calories, putting your go-to flavors on the “do not eat” list. There are a lot of healthy DIY ice cream recipes out there, but there’s an even easier way to whip up a sweet treat that only uses one ingredient (spoiler alert: it’s a fruit!).

Frozen Banana Ice Cream

  1. Cut ripe bananas into small or medium-sized pieces and store them in an airtight container.
  2. Place it in the freezer and wait at least 2 hours (or overnight).
  3. Use a food processor or blender to whip the bananas into a creamy consistency. Take a break every minute or so to scrape down the sides with a spatula.
  4. Transfer it back to the container and freeze until solid (you can also enjoy your ice cream right away!).

Tip: Get creative and add a dash of honey or peanut butter while the bananas are blending. A tablespoon of Nutella, chocolate powder, or coconut will pair perfectly with the banana flavor, too!
